Amichai’s Top 50/25 ‘Que Sera Sera’
This one sneaked its way into the top 50 yesterday when I heard that Doris Day died. She was much beloved by my parents, esp. by my father (who liked blonds) and is responsible for one of the only times I remember them dancing in the living room. The record playing was ‘Que Sera Sera.’ A phone call to my mother in Jerusalem confirmed that indeed, at some point in the late 50’s when my mother was visiting her parents in London, my father went to a dance hall in Tel Aviv and learned how to waltz. He also learned how to swim. The dancing was rare but the swimming became his constant practice almost to the end. But today I remember the dancing, and the words, in some strange language I didn’t understand and listen to today as some bland and honest life-truth and philosophical resignation to the fates and faiths of our existence, not without its dips and falls and expectations:
Que será, será
Whatever will be, will be
The future’s not ours to see
Que será, será
What will be, will be
Bye Doris. Thanks for the dance!
