Amichai’s Top 50/37. ‘The Rose’

“When the night has been too lonely and the road has been too long
And you think that love is only for the lucky and the strong
Just remember in the winter, far beneath the bitter snows
Lies the seed, that with the sun’s love in the spring becomes the rose”

Another one of those songs I’ve sung alone or together, all words by heart, always a reminder that in deep funk lies a seed of next.
Helpful. Healing.

That one time on a hill in India, sunset, about to bend down and smell a radiant rose, same pink as the sunset, and GuruJi, our elder teacher, in broken English stopped me to say — this rose will only give you this smell, her gift, this once: focus, be aware, grateful.

The roses that grow wild in our heart and demand the discipline of tender attention, as the Little Prince knew to learn.

Recorded by Bette Midler for the soundtrack of the 1979 film ‘The Rose’ about Janice Joplin, the song became a classic. It keeps growing on me, wild roses within, seeds of wild hope growing, patient.
