Top 50/10 Bride Over Troubled Water
Simon and Garfuknel recorded this hit in 1970. I was one, and my mother loved this a lot and I really remember the record cover. My father called them Shimon and Frenkel, Yiddish style. Over the year this has become her mantra for tough moments and there have always been some – personal, collective, something on the news, a sudden phone call, when you gotta cross that bridge you said you’d cross when you get there – you need the find that bridge, and cross, over troubles.
Bridge over troubled waters is what she calls a smile, a hug, sometimes a cup of tea late night in the kitchen and a violin concerto or perhaps this very song. Me too. I love the Gladys Night version https://secondhandsongs.com/performance/22130
but on days when an unknown sister is put to rest and the heart is heavy with what’s written on the wall, this original hymn helps.
